Food: Lay's Potato Chips Unleashed Its Own Vodka, and It Sold Out

Lay's Potato Chips Unleashed Its Own Vodka, and It Sold Out Immediately

Arby's started selling French fry-flavored vodka last month. Now the makers of Lay's potato chips are getting in on that action with a new vodka of their own.

They partnered with a company in Portland, Oregon called Eastside Distilling, but unfortunately, it's already sold out. They announced it yesterday . . . started selling bottles online for $40 the same day . . . and they're already gone.

It's not clear if they plan to make more, but don't feel like you're missing out TOO much. They used Lay's "proprietary potatoes" to make it, but we don't see anything about it actually tasting like chips. It sounds like it's just regular vodka with the Lay's logo on it.

And since you can't sell liquor without a license, you wouldn't even be able to re-sell it on eBay.

Best Bets For Your Whiskey-Buying Dollar

Thanks to effective advertising and inflated senses of status, there are some people who think only big-name brands of whiskey at high prices are the way to go when you want a quality product. That’s not so. It’s better to do a bit of research and listen to people who know more than you do about the topic. For that, we go to John McCarthy of Gibson in San Francisco…who is generally respected as a man who knows his stuff. Here are the bottles he recommends picking up…starting with the cheapest.

  • Evan Williams Black Label ($10.99) – “Tastes like bourbons are supposed to taste like.”
  • Rittenhouse Rye ($22.99) – “The gold standard of American ryes.”
  • Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt Scotch Whiskey ($27.99) – “Drinks like boozy cream soda balanced out by earthy malt.”
  • Alberta Rye Dark Batch ($28.99) – “Proves their prowess as North America’s biggest rye whiskey producer.”
  • Maker’s 46 ($28.99) – “They took regular Maker’s Mark and pumped up the vanilla and baking spice notes.”
  • Old Forester Classic 86 Proof ($29.99) – An award-winner that’s “a bargain at the price.”
  • Slane Triple Casked Irish Whiskey ($29.99) – “Crushes it” in a category that sometimes gets a bad rap.
  • Knob Creek Straight Rye ($32.49) – “A straightforward no-brainer.”
  • High West Double Rye ($32.99) – “Not for the faint of palate.”
  • Suntory Toki ($33.07) – “Perfect for a classic Japanese highball.”
  • POWERS Three Swallow ($39.99) – “Rich, smooth, easy-drinking, with a bigger body that Jameson.”
  • 1792 Full Proof Bourbon ($44.99) – “Arguably the best bourbon you can get for under $50.”
  • Michter’s American Whiskey ($45.99) – “A warm weather drinker’s dream.”
  • FEW Rye ($54.99) – “Not the cheapest, but a definite must-have.”
  • BenRiach 10-Year-Old Curiositas Peated ($58.99) – “A top-notch intro into the wild world of peated single malts.”
  • Glendronach 12 Year ($58.99) – An award-winner that’s “fireside ready at all times.”
  • Kavalan Distillery Select ($59.99) – “Kalavan is making some really elegant and sophisticated whiskies.”
  • Brenne French Single Malt ($64.99) – “A far cry from anything birthed on American shores.”
  • Peerless Kentucky Straight Bourbon ($74.99) – From a fifth-generation whiskey maker that certainly knows what it’s doing.”
  • Ardbeg Corryvreckan ($85.99) – “Racked up a whopping 96 from Whiskey Advocate.”
