A new study published in the journal Emotion shows that conjuring up nostalgic memories can help you beat the chilly temps in winter. Participants were asked to take part in one of five different experiments, each of which looked at how nostalgia was related to perceptions of temperature.

In one experiment, participants placed their hands in ice-cold water while recalling a warm and fuzzy memory. Those who recalled a nostalgic event held their hands in the water longer than those who thought of an ordinary event.
